Our first three groups haven't really seen any upsets, although there has been late drama in each group:
So to our final group, where Italy are top seeds. The other three teams - Brazil, Sweden and Australia - all have quality players, making this the potential "Group of Death"...
Australia vs Sweden
The lowest-ranked two teams in the group get things underway, both knowing points here could be vital. In the 19th minute Jessica Samuelsson's floated cross finds Stina Blackstenius, who thumps her header past Lydia Williams to put Sweden ahead. And 20 minutes later Blackstenius heads in a second.
Australia offer little in resistance, and Sweden claim a strong opening win.
Final score: Australia 0-2 Sweden
Player of the match: Stina Blackstenius (SWE)

Italy vs Brazil
The two most high-profile matches between these two teams are the 1970 and 1994 Men's World Cup finals, and this match followed the pattern of one of them.
Unfortunately, it was the 1994 final, as the match finished scoreless. The closest we saw to a goal was a rebound shot by Vanessa Bernauer that Bárbara easily held.
Final score: Italy 0-0 Brazil
Player of the match: Sara Gama (ITA)

Brazil vs Australia
The draw in the previous match puts Australia one defeat from elimination. And they moved over the trapdoor when Aline Milene went on a surging run through the Australian midfield and unleashed a fine shot from the edge of the box to put Brazil ahead. In the 38th minute Fabi Simoes cannoned a volley from 20 yards. Williams did brilliantly to push it onto the crossbar, but the ball came back to hit the Australian keeper and trickle along the goal line, allowing Gabi Zanotti to tap in and give Brazil a two-goal lead at the break.
Australia never looked like rescuing themselves in the second half, and defeat consigned them to elimination.
Final score: Brazil 2-0 Australia

Sweden vs Italy
A win for Sweden would see them through and leave Italy in a lot of trouble. And Emma Berglund's header on 36 minutes gave the Swedes the lead.
However, Italy gathered themselves during the interval and levelled in the 48th minute when Samuelsson's clearance rebounded to Barbara Bonansea to confidently slot home. Like the match against Brazil, Italy struggled to open up their opponents, and once again had to settle for a draw.
Final score: Sweden 1-1 Italy

This is how this leaves the group:
Italy are at risk of being the only top seeds to fail to progress this year, can they rescue themselves?
Italy vs Australia
Italy clearly have to win to stand a chance of qualification, with a 3-goal win securing it. However, they were met with resistance from Australia who wanted to at least gain a point, and the first half was goalless.
Australia nearly made it to the hour mark intact, but in the 57th minute Andrine Hegerberg thumped a spectacular 25 yard shot to put Italy ahead in a game for the first time this tournament. Maria Alves smashed in the second from a difficult angle, and the crucial third came straight after when Bonansea nodded in Alves' cross. Australia failed to grab their first goal of the tournament, which meant Italy had done what they required.
Final score: Italy 3-0 Australia

The other game means that one of these teams will be eliminated. Currently, Sweden lead on goals scored, so a draw would see them through. This puts the onus on Brazil, and they rose to the challenge spectacularly just 2 minutes in when Zanotti belted a 30 yard volley that Sabrina D'Angelo couldn't keep out.
The second half also saw an immediate goal, and again it fell to Brazil as Milene neatly tucked away the rebound to Cristiane's shot. Sweden couldn't force their way back, and found themselves eliminated from a group that they had lead all the way until the last.
Final score: Brazil 2-0 Sweden

It feels harsh on Italy, but the flip side is that the two sides that remained undefeated progress. This group did live up to its billing as a close call, and its completion means we have our 8 quarter finalists. As Italy could only finish second today, they will take on USA in the next round, whilst Brazil will take on England.
We'll cover all four quarter finals next time.
